A groundbreaking new website focusing on sporting groups in Perry Barr known Perry Barr CSPAN has been set up as a voluntary organisation in which a website and sports directory has been formed to promote, engage, encourage more young people to be more physically active and aware of the services on offer in their area.
With a search facility listing sports clubs, facilities and groups in Perry Barr, the website will also promote other aspects of a healthy lifestyle with regular tips on nutrition and healthy eating.

Then why not take advantage of a free health check available at Finch Road Health Centre, 2 Finch Road, Lozells for everyone aged 40 to 75 years and living in the Lozells and Handsworth area who is not already registered with a doctor. The check is about assessing your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. The check will only take around 20 minutes and is very straightforward. The health professional will:
- Ask you simple information about your lifestyle
- Record your height, weight, age, gender and ethnicity
- Take your blood pressure

As part of the Change 4 Life programme funded by Heart of Birmingham Primary Care Trust free local jogging groups are being held by qualified instructors for anybody over the age of 16. The nearest sessions for Birchfield residents are at the Alexander Stadium, Walsall Road every Monday morning starting at 10.00 a.m. or every Tuesday 12 noon at Handsworth Leisure Centre. The Birchfield ‘Be Healthy’ Fun Day held on Saturday 26th June at St. Clare’s School was a great family day with attendance of over 400 plus local residents. The weather was fantastic which helped.

There were plenty of sporting activites including West Midlands Police who were offering Bikeability Level 1 training to celebrate National Bike week.

Other activties included mendhi, face painting, speed cycling, the bicycle fruit smoothie maker and Inspired Coaching multi – sports activities.

- Event was well organised and thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.
- Good day, very busy networking and glad for the shade!

Residents are invited to a FREE community event taking place at St. Clare’s Primary School, Robert Road, Handsworth,B20 3RT on Saturday 26th June 2010 between 12.00 midday and 4.00 p.m.
The theme of the fun day is about ‘being healthy’ and promotimg activities that encourage healthy living and lifestyles.
Officers from the neighbourhood police team will be providing free bike training so if you are interested you need to book your place in advance by calling 675 1731. Remember to bring along your own bike and helmet.
All age groups are welcome and to help keep children entertained there will be fun activities including free face painting, football target net, Hula Hoop and Sponge Javelin throwing.
Come along with your family, friends and neighbours. You’ll all receive a warm welcome.

Getting fit and active is the lesson of the day for pupils from primary schools in Birchfield.
Children from Westminster, Holy Trinity, St Clare’s and St. Mary’s primary schools can take part in a variety of weekly sports activity sessions. The programme runs every Tuesday starting on 27th April from 4pm – 6pm at Broadway School and costs £1 per session for young people 5 to 13 years.
The launch held event on Saturday 24th April at Broadway School offered free taster sessions.

Everyone having fun and chilling out in the sun
The aim of scheme is to provide young people with the opportunity to experience different activities such as hip hop dancing, boxing, rounders in addition to the main stream sports like football and cricket.

The project runs until 31st March and is funded via Be Birmingham’s Successful Neighbourhoods fund.
