Spread the Word! Lozells, Birchfield and Handsworth People’s Conference

Posted on 14th June 2011 by

Citizens unit to make change!

The Lozells, Birchfield & Handsworth People’s Conference is taking place on Saturday 9th July 2011(10.30am-2.00pm) at Handsworth Campus, City College Birmingham, Soho Road,Birmingham, B21 9DP

To confirm your attendance, please email rajinder@neighbourhoodconsultancy.co.uk

Why are we doing this?

In the last few years, many residents and community groups have been actively involved in helping their neighbourhoods become better places to live and work in.

We have achieved a lot together as local communities in improving the profile of our neighbourhoods, however there is still more to be done. Local households are finding themselves affected by increasingly tough times. In our Ward, committed individuals from different agencies have already started to talk about how with fewer resources we can work together better.

 What are we doing?

You are invited to join many other residents to help shape the future of life in our area over the coming years. In this most significant Conference in years, we will be setting out our key plan to enable us to work better together.

Firstly, we would like to set up 5 independent Neighbourhood Forums covering the entire Ward. They will be residents’ led groups who genuinely work in the interests of everybody within their neighbourhood.

Secondly, we would like to bring people together to discuss Community Safety, Health & WellbeingHousing & EnvironmentEmployment & Business, Children & Young PeopleWomen and Voluntary/Community Groups

What do we want from you?

We want to hear your views and advice on our ideas to transform the Ward to put residents at the heart of everything:

-        Tell us the key issues around where you live or work in the Ward

-        Tell us what you think the solutions may be to solving some of these issues

-        Tell us how we all can do better

The Big Lunch – 5th June 2011

Posted on 17th May 2011 by

The Big Lunch is about getting as many people as possible across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a act of community, friendship and fun.

This year it’s taking place on Sunday 5th June. It’s still not too late to organise an event. A Big Lunch this summer with your neighbours is a great opportunity to have some fun. There are many benefits to holding this event:

  • To create a good community spirit
  • To show how local people can change a neighbourhood for good
  • To share stories and skills
  • To discover common ground across age, class, faith and race.

For further details visit www.thebiglunch.com - where you can search for a Big Lunch event happening near to you in Birchfield.

New Culture Website for under 24′s in Birmingham

Posted on 19th April 2011 by

A new website has launched in Birmingham, giving young people access to information and listings across arts, sports and heritage events and activities in the city.

Filter.me.uk http://filter.me.uk/ is an online portal designed to give young people information on what’s happening across the city’s cultural sector. With the ability to seach by geographic location and event type, users can get access to hundreds of activities, projects and showcases in Birmingham.

Themed as “Your route to a Creative Future”, Filter aims to engage with young people, up to the age of 24, that have an active interest in the arts. The site lists everything from exhibitions and events, to workshops and seminars; in addition to exclusive vouchers and competitions. It includes ‘early years’ and family friendly events, making it an ideal resource for parents wishing to engage their children in the arts from an early age.

Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, Councillor Martin Mullaney, said:

“Birmingham is a cultural capital and Filter effectively signposts the wide ranging cultural offer across the city, helping young people to find out what’s going on and where. The site will include information and listings on hundreds of events; from art exhibitions and craft workshops, to dance classes and heritage tours.

The pupose of Filter is to make the arts more accessible to people from across the whole of Birmingham. This means that as well as the larger, better known organisations and locations, we’re also connecting with small and very local community centres and arts groups. The site relies on organisations uploading their own information, which means that they can communicate directly to the young participants through the site.”

Filter was born out of the Creative Future initiative, which brings together strategic partners who aim to increase access to and raise the quality of arts activities for 0 – 19 year olds. Following the launch of  Creative Future II, an extension of the programme that looks at giving young people from across the wider cultural sector the chance to progress, Filter was created.

The project is being led by the Gallery 37

Great New Makeover in Crompton Avenue

Posted on 12th April 2011 by

With funding from Lozells & East Handsworth Community Chest it has been possible to give the area of shrub land in the middle of Crompton a makeover. Firstly, CSV Environment were appointed to find out from residents what improvements they would like to see. The majority view was to have the area cleared with low maintenance ground cover shrubs.

Central Handsworth Practical Care project then proceeded to clear the land.

North Handsworth project then proceeded with landsacping works.

The end result………………………
