A Message from the Chair of Lozells and East Handsworth Ward Committee

On behalf of the members of Lozells and East Handsworth Ward we are proud of the work that has begun in the Birchfield Neighbourhood Management area which we have supported with Community Chest grant awards towards environmental improvements such as gating schemes and developing social media links with the new Be Heard in Birchfield blog.

Executive Summary

The Birchfield Neighbourhood Plan has been adopted by Be Birmingham, the Local Strategic Partnership. The plan builds on and extends the excellent work already happening in Birchfield to address the needs and aspirations of the community over a ten year period, 2010 – 2020.

3. Community

Birchfield has a diverse population. Recent population estimates for 2007 suggest that Birchfield neighbourhood has a younger age profile than Birmingham as a whole. 26.6% of people in the neighbourhood are 15 or under, compared to 22.1% citywide. In contrast only 13.4% of people in the neighbourhood are over 60 compared to 17.9% across the city.

4. Ten Year Strategy

The Birchfield Neighbourhood Plan is an action plan that sets out the core delivery for the neighbourhood programme 2009 – 2011, comprising of a vision, a set of supporting principles, and target outcomes.

5. Delivery, Monitoring and Review

The lead partner is responsible for leading the delivery of each action with the support of the listed key partners, together with anyone else who would like to be involved, against specified milestones and deadlines.

6. Resources

Some of the activities in the action plan can be delivered, without the need for additional financial investment, through service delivery and community partners planning and working more effectively together, including sharing intelligence and realigning existing resources.

7. Birchfield Action Plan

The Action Plan is set out into five themed chapters, eg. ‘Succeed economically or ‘Be healthy’. Under each theme is a regular list of ‘baseline’ information. This is a mix of what is happening now – how residents feel and think about their neighbourhoods, along with what residents are experiencing daily.
